Major boost for Methlick tower fund

Methlick minister the Rev Matt Canlis and the Save Our Tower Sign, which has become a focal point in the village.

A PROJECT to complete repairs to the tower of the North-east’s oldest church has been given a significant boost.Around £8,500 was raised at a recent fundraiser in Methlick’s Beaton Hall.  The event was organised for the appeal which has been launched to bring in £35,000 by the end of the year to finish work at the local parish church.

Every home in the village received an invitation to the free hog roast, inviting them to bring or send a donation in a special envelope. The evening was organised by Methlick minister, the Rev Matt Canlis, who said everyone was delighted by the amount raised. He added: “It is a major boost for the project. It was a magnificent effort by the whole community.”

A three-year timescale had originally been drawn up to raise the money for the tower repairs, but Christmas has now been set as the target date.  Mr Canlis said he hoped to be able to announce they had achieved their goal at the Christmas Eve service.

The fund at the moment stands at around £24,000 and donations are continuing to boost the total.  Work has already been completed on a new church roof and pointing, and the final stages of the repairs involve the elimination of all the fresh dry rot outbreaks which were discovered.
